<div style="color: #606060; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 26px; padding: 0px;">
Once upon a time in Singapore, people were free to chew "Chewing Gums". No one really took it as a privilege, it was as normal as any other snack or chocolates available in stores. Few miscreants though started using their creative juices in acts which were not so helpful generally. I have learnt that, people experienced chewing gums left stuck on seats of buses and trains. When the doors on trains auto opened, the Chewing Gums used to stretch and stick on people's faces and hair who were alighting or getting in. It was very simple tool to create mess. Today chewing gums are banned in Singapore and are not available in any stores.</div>
<div style="color: #606060; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 26px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #606060; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 26px; padding: 0px;">
One morning when I was about to leave for work, I noticed my son constructing his world with Lego on the floor. He is 9 years now. As a general understanding & practice at home he brushes his teeth first thing in the morning. I reminded him of that very politely. He did not react. My polite reminder turned into a gentle instruction. And then repeated into a quick life improving lesson. I still got ignored and lost my patience, raised my voice and authoritatively pushed him further. I took advantage of my position and authority to implement what I thought was right thing to do. But in turn he would have felt loss of freedom.</div>
<div style="color: #606060; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 26px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #606060; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 26px; padding: 0px;">
There can be innumerable examples pulled out from our daily experiences around us, which revolve around this wonderful relationship of Freedom & Responsibility. We earn our freedom by being responsible and loose it otherwise.</div>
<div style="color: #606060; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 26px; padding: 0px;">
<img __jive_id="149592" alt="Screen Shot 2016-04-09 at 7.38.59 am.png" class="image-1 jive-image" data-mce-src="/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-18006-149592/Screen+Shot+2016-04-09+at+7.38.59+am.png" data-mce-style="width: 216px; height: 198.232px;" height="198" src="https://thoughtworks.jiveon.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-18006-149592/Screen+Shot+2016-04-09+at+7.38.59+am.png" style="border: 0px; height: 198.232px; margin: 2px 20px 12px; max-width: calc(100% - 40px); width: 216px;" width="216" /></div>
<div style="color: #606060; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 26px; padding: 0px;">
During my college days, I felt pretty free & had pride in exploiting the state my health. Eat whatever, whenever and nothing affects me. I felt great about this during my early career years. Working late nights, weekends and boast about it. After few years of fun, the first alarm raised was by my digestive system. Then by my Spine. Then eyes. And so on. Freedom was lost. I was fortunate enough to get good suggestions from around me, which worked and fixed all the issues. I was able to regain my freedom, or I better say I earned it this time.</div>
<div style="color: #606060; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 26px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #606060; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 26px; padding: 0px;">
In my experience, the more responsible we are about our actions, the more freedom we earn and enjoy. The project teams who feel responsible and take actions to build trust within and quality into their deliverables, enjoy a lot of freedom and confidence during later phases of the project delivery.</div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Testing can be really interesting, realisation happened once again yesterday evening, at <a href="http://info.thoughtworks.com/vodqa-singapore-registration.html" target="_blank">vodQA</a> session, hosted by Thoughtworks (TW) Singapore.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pub/prasanna-kanagasabai/7/a46/561" target="_blank">Prasanna</a> who works for TW, a very lively and highly experienced professional, lead us thru what he called initial 5% of a technique - SQL Injection, commonly used across the world to hack websites and bring them down and more.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We quickly installed few pieces of software as he suggested, to get our web server and MySQL DB working. Then installed a quick vulnerable web application to get our hands dirty with SQL Injection. The webpage had a field, part of a form to submit. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Our first task:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1. Make the application throw error.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And so on... (<a href="http://pentestmonkey.net/cheat-sheet/sql-injection/mysql-sql-injection-cheat-sheet" target="_blank">cheat sheet</a>)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2. Find out which database is used by application</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3. Pass queries from the form field to get number of columns of the table being used.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4. Find out the list of application users.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5. Open a file from filesystem of the web server (Wow!)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">6. From the URL modify query to get information about web application.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7. Write a file to the filesystem of the web server (Really?)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8. Write a shell script to be executed on web server (to cause damages?) </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">9. Create a script in python to perform these steps above.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Automated tool to find vulnerabilities of a web application: http://sqlmap.org</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A web application available to try your hands: <span style="font-size: 13px;">http://testphp.vulnweb.com</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A book for more on this and similar: <span style="font-size: 13px;">Web Application Hackers Handbook</span> </span></div>

Woila!!<br />
<br />
Over the new <span style="font-family: inherit;">year </span>long weekend, besides the new year celebrations and family time, I was also able to accomplish an enjoyable wishful activity of mine - 'Cleaning Heat Sink and Fan of my HP Laptop'.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The CPU temperature of my 5 year oldie used to remain in the range of 50 to 70 deg C.</span><br />
<br />
I referred the below two resources to prepare for it and followed the instructions shown. During the steps I also had to Google for more resources and some steps but the below ones were the baseline which I used.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+-+Cleaning+HP+Pavilion+dv6000+Fan/3826/1"><span style="font-family: inherit;">http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+-+Cleaning+HP+Pavilion+dv6000+Fan/3826/1</span></a><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcy0YSOmX4E&list=WL78DF75D50D149DD5"><span style="font-family: inherit;">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcy0YSOmX4E&list=WL78DF75D50D149DD5</span></a><br />
<br />
I enjoyed the entire series of episodes which began with an idea, then gathering courage to do it, learning the how to part, managing expectations for getting the required time out from family time on a holiday, executing it, climax thrill of the laptop not working, researching for new laptops, then finally finding the most silly looking miraculous trick to see it work, test it for a couple of days, use it for something productive, and ... share it as an achievement.<br />
<br />
Magic steps that worked:<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><a href="http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/Can-t-wake-up-laptop-HP-Pavilion-dv6000/td-p/287126/page/4">http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/Can-t-wake-up-laptop-HP-Pavilion-dv6000/td-p/287126/page/4</a>#</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Now the CPU temperature is in the range of 30 to 45 deg C. Coool!!!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Last but not the least I was almost about to buy a new laptop (maybe a Macbook), so I was able to delay an expense of at least 1000 SGD, not sure till when. Super!</span></div>

I completed reading the wonderful book by Sir Ken Robinson <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Element-Finding-Passion-Changes-Everything/dp/0143116738" target="_blank">The Element</a>. I loved the insights presented in this book and wanted to record them before the experience goes far into my memory database. I quickly pulled out few statements and thoughts from the book and have listed them down below.<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Being in element doesn't consume energy, instead generates it. This is the perfect attribute to identify the element for a person. </span></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The education system was designed by industries, so we have a school day defined within fixed time periods. The learning through cannot be confined into predefined periods, it is quite free flowing. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Questioning ourselves, our abilities, questioning for granted beliefs is a key thing to discover your element. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Our body has many more senses other than common five - sense of balance, temperature, kinesthetic, ...</span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Intelligence is much more than just IQ - linguistic, musical, mathematical, spatial, kinesthetic, interpersonal, knowledge of self, some are dormant and others dominant. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">If you don't embrace the fact that you think about the world on diverse ways, you severely limit your chances of finding the person that you were meant to be. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Three main attributes of intelligence: it is diverse, dynamic and distinct. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Discovering your element is all about allowing yourself access to all of the ways in which you experience the world and discovering where your own true strengths lie.</span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Intelligence and creativity are very tightly coupled. You can't be creative without being intelligent. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Imagination. Through imagination we not only bring to mind things that we have experienced but things that we have never experienced. We have something else of profound and unique significance - we can create. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Creativity : the process of having original ideas that have value. To be creative you actually need to do something. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Your tribe: being with people with same interests or likings enhances your tribe. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Book: organizing genius: the secrets of creative collaboration warren benis</span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Being is your tribe and being in a crowd are two very similar experiences but very different. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Fear is the most common obstacle to finding your element. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Doing something for your own good is rarely for your own good if it causes you to be less than who you really are. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">We put such a premium on being approved of, we become reluctant to take risks. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">It's not what happens to us that makes the difference in our lives, what makes the difference is our attitude toward what happens. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Mastering a combination of attitudes and behavior leads to opportunities and give confidence to take them. </span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Meditation is a way to boost our intuitive abilities.</span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Mentors roles:</span></div>
</li>
<ul>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">1. Recognition<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">2. Encouragement<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">3. Facilitating<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">4. Stretching<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</li>
</ul>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Book: self reliance - Ralph Waldo <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Book: feel the fear and do it anyway - Susan Jeffers <o:p></o:p></span></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">It may not be necessary to be in your element and earn your living or earn your living thru your element. You may be doing it off your primary work areas as an amateur. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Public education puts tremendous pressure on students to confirm to certain predefined things. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
</li>
<li><div class="MsoPlainText" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The fundamental theme of this book is that we urgently need to make fuller use of our own natural resources. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

There are a few book reviews also, which I loved and want to save them.<br />

I was reading the book by <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Element-Finding-Passion-Everything/dp/0670020478" target="_blank">Sir Ken Robinson "The Element"</a> and realized we have so so many senses beyond the basic five and the list goes on and on. Our body is an amazing work of art. <br />
<br />
<strong>The sense of pain</strong><br />
<strong>The sense of time</strong><br />
<strong>The sense of movement</strong><br />
<strong>The sense of where you are in the world</strong><br />
<strong>The sense of where your body is compared to itself</strong><br />
<strong>The sense of temperature</strong><br />
<strong>The sense of pressure</strong><br />
<strong>The sense of itchiness</strong><br />

<span style="color: maroon;">Thank Others</span></h3>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Make sure you take every opportunity you have to thank others for what they do and what they help you with. People don’t accomplish anything on their own and it always takes help from others. Thank them for this help. Whether its your boss, spouse, friends, or stranger, thank others for whatever you can. Being humble in other’s eyes means you don’t claim your own accomplishments, and instead, thank others for how they helped, what they did, how they encouraged or supported you, etc. There are always things to thank others for. Find someone each day and thank them for something. That said, I want to thank each of YOU for reading and supporting this site, it wouldn’t exist without you!</div>
<h3 style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #2763a5; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; font: normal normal normal 140%/100% 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px;">
<span style="color: maroon;">Redirect Praise</span></h3>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Redirecting praise is useful to be more humble and modest. If you don’t accept praise outright and instead, redirect it to others who helped you, trained you or even allowed you to do something, you pass on that praise to others without taking the credit directly. Accepting praise doesn’t really make a person less humble, but down playing your significance or importance on something certainly makes you more humble. Knowing and sharing the fact that you were not the reason for some accomplishment goes a long ways in the eyes of others. This is especially important in work groups and it drastically reduces the risk of anyone thinking you take all the credit. If you deflect or redirect all praise and credit given you to others involved and truly believe the fact that you weren’t that significant, you further develop a humble attitude.</div>
<h3 style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #2763a5; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; font: normal normal normal 140%/100% 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px;">
<span style="color: maroon;">You Don’t Have to Be Right</span></h3>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
A humble person never tries to out do someone else and make themselves look better or smarter. This includes having to be right. When you try to prove you are right, or even when you say something simple like "I know", you are showing dominance over the other person. Instead of wanting to be right, even if you know something already, simple say, "Interesting, thanks for that." A humble person knows only one thing, that they are NOT always right! If you have an idea to present or a solution to offer, don’t try to convince others that its the right solution. Say something like, "I have an suggestion, although I’m not sure its the right thing to do, since I’m often wrong, which is to [blah blah]…" Make an effort to being humble using these types of suggestions so you don’t come across to others as always having to be right.</div>
<h3 style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #2763a5; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; font: normal normal normal 140%/100% 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px;">
<span style="color: maroon;">It Wasn’t You Who Got You Here</span></h3>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
People are constantly striving for success and they often feel very proud of themselves for getting to where they are at. Humble people are not proud and know that they didn’t get themselves here. They know that others helped them, encouraged them and assisted them to get to where they are now. If you recognize this and always see how others help you out, you can be more humble by sharing that fact and not taking credit yourself. This is similar to the first one on the list, where its important to thank others.</div>
<h3 style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #2763a5; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; font: normal normal normal 140%/100% 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px;">
<span style="color: maroon;">Don’t Be First</span></h3>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
First is not necessarily a bad thing, however being first can come across as competitive, self promoting or demoting of others. None of those things are common for a humble person. In a group or workplace, if you don’t be first to speak, participate or get involved, you give others a chance to be first. This can be very humbling for several reasons. You may see that others have better or smarter ideas than you had in the first place, you’re not the only one capable of the task or message and that you aren’t necessarily needed as much as you would like to think you are. These are very humbling realizations so if want to learn to be more humble, next time you have a chance to be first, don’t!</div>
<h3 style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #2763a5; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; font: normal normal normal 140%/100% 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px;">
<span style="color: maroon;">Appreciate Everything</span></h3>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
So many things around us are not our doing, we often forget to see our own insignificance since we get so focused on our own lives and accomplishments. Well to be humble, its importance to recognize and appreciate all the wonderful things around us. Appreciate the place you live, the health, wealth and happiness you experience or have opportunity for. Appreciating things adds greatly to a person’s humility and knowing that we have so much to be thankful for builds on many of the other items in this list. Look around in nature and at the beauty of life sometime and just take it in for a few moments. Think of the world and the awesome creation that God has provided you, and its impossible NOT to be humbled. Show this appreciation in your life and spirit and it will certainly help you be more humble.</div>
<h3 style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #2763a5; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; font: normal normal normal 140%/100% 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px;">
<span style="color: maroon;">Listen More Than You Speak</span></h3>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Similar to the item above, "Don’t Be First" it applies to listening in a more broad sense. Listening more than you speak can be very powerful and if you use this you can learn many things about others and practice humility in how you respond. It gives you time to think and provides time for others to share their own opinions. Listening more can be very respectful to others, and you can learn a lot more by listening to others than you can by speaking.</div>
<h3 style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #2763a5; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; font: normal normal normal 140%/100% 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px;">
<span style="color: maroon;">Don’t Judge Others</span></h3>
<div style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 15px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Last but not least, a very important aspect of being humble is to not judge others. Judgment is a dangerous thing and you can’t stay open minded, receptive to ideas, empathetic or appreciative of others if you are judging them or their ideas. Everyone is different and have different ideas and when you judge those, you are really showing that you have some overseeing significance or power to make a judgment call, which you certainly don’t if you want to be a humble person. So, to be more humble, practice leaving others to show themselves over time and to let their ideas play out without judgment. Definitely, make an effort not to express judgment and don’t talk about people behind their backs. This is just another form of judgment and shows dominance, so don’t judge others, and you will be more humble.</div>

I hope this list is helpful and that each of you can take some of these steps to being more humble. I know that writing and researching this has been a bit humbling for myself, since I know I don’t do all of these things. I obviously have my work cut out for me. My next and last article in this series is going to look at Being Humble: Why Bother?. I hope you will come back and read why I think being humble is important and what it is useful for. I’d love to hear any other tips and ideas you may have for this list of action steps to be more humble, if so, please comment them below!</div>

I was really looking forward to be in his talk and I can say that I found him more than I had expected. His talks were all very engaging. The analogy of the utility software with sewage pipe from business perspective was quite surreal. Both utility and strategic software delivery teams follow different patterns of agile and have different benefits from it. I also realised that the project I am part of used to be stragic at some point in time, right now it is pure utility only. </span></span><br />

I was lucky enough to be at <a href="http://www.citconf.com/singapore2012/">CITCON</a> 2012 at Singapore (pronounced KITCON, because it is Kontinuous Integration and not Sontinuous Integration, nice one :)). When I came to know about it initially thru the <a href="http://www.meetup.com/Agile-Singapore/">Agile Singapore mailing list</a>, it was already late, the registration website was showing a house full message. But luckily I knew a person belonging to one of the sponsoring company and he thankfully helped me secure a seat in.<br />

The conference spanned across two days, a Friday evening and a full Saturday. Friday evening we got together and introduced ourselves and decided on the topics to be presented on the next day. The introduction included each individual talking a few words about why were they present and what was their intention to take out of the conference. Additional to that Paul and Jeffery introduced the <a href="http://www.citconf.com/singapore2012/openspace.php">Open Space</a> concept and the process it will progress rest of the conference.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5995422/openspace.jpg">list of topics</a> was posted on a grid on a board.<br />

I was able to attend the following sessions:<br />
1. CI 101 - By Andy Marks from ThoughtWorks<br />
2. Strategies for Scaling and Speeding Tests - Vivek from ThoughtWorks<br />
3. TDD vs BDD - Abhay from New Context<br />
4. CI in a lean startup - By Andy Marks from ThoughtWorks<br />
5. Pair Programming Done Right - Paul Julius from Co-founder CITCON<br />
6. Selling Change - Jeffrey Fredrick from Co-founder CITCON<br />
<br />
Each session was amazing in itself and always ended up in high spirits. As the open space format defines the sessions are driven by the people attending it. So every session started with a speaker initiating it, followed by people sitting in circles or randomly and converting it into a discussion mode with lots of inputs from attendees.<br />
<br />
The conference was well sufficed with food and snacks at regular intervals. I enjoyed a lot talking to new people from different companies and learning a lot about their work and processes.<br />

Both the sessions by co-founders PJ and JF were really awesome. While PJ described beautiful ways to start doing pair programming and its benefits, JF led the groups thru wonderful walkthru's of ways to sell change to a group of people around you.<br />

They also had a wonderful unique way of leading the introduction talk on day 1 by dropping the post it chits on the floor leaving us to imagine like a 3D slide show with slides falling on the floor and Zero text display.<br />

The overall experience was super nice and I kept recollecting it all thru out my next day during my idle mind times and ofcourse images will last much longer. I'd love to join it again and next definitely contribute more than this time!!</div>Riju Kansalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17338663228987794383noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7120386180118735454.post-42589920052892069612012-02-07T19:57:00.000-08:002012-02-07T19:59:49.402-08:00Covey’s Time Management Matrix<A href="http://cdn.sidsavara.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/merrillcoveymatrix.png"><IMG style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 422px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 433px; CURSOR: hand" border=0 alt="" src="http://cdn.sidsavara.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/merrillcoveymatrix.png"></A><br /><br /><DIV><A href="http://sidsavara.com/personal-development/nerdy-productivity-coveys-time-management-matrix-illustrated-with-xkcd-comics">http://sidsavara.com/personal-development/nerdy-productivity-coveys-time-management-matrix-illustrated-with-xkcd-comics</A></DIV><br /><DIV></DIV>Riju Kansalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17338663228987794383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7120386180118735454.post-21614774929203629102011-11-17T00:11:00.001-08:002012-01-01T00:03:19.604-08:0033 Powerful Ways of Overcoming Fear . Every minute, every day, thruout the year. This is the hidden meaning behind the saying - 'Right thing @ Right time'. When you do right thing all the time, automatically when right time comes, the results accelerate. People call it luck. :)Riju Kansalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17338663228987794383noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7120386180118735454.post-2846700809339339272010-07-03T00:31:00.000-07:002010-07-04T02:10:01.528-07:00Experienced power of Automation Testing!Recently I experienced a wonderful effect of Automation Test Suite. I think I'd like preserve this experience in the form of few words and share it with friends.<div><br /></div><div><u>Present Scenario:</u></div><div>Cycle 3 Started beginning of this week.</div><div>The 26 Test Sets totalling 3000+ automated test cases started to be executed.</div><div>Test data was prepared as a pre-requisite by SME manual testing team.</div><div>The very first day of Cycle 3 execution the application which was nearing UAT completion, started crying.</div><div>23 Critical, High and Medium defects were logged the very first day.</div><div>The management lost confidence in the build.</div><div>No Go.</div><div><br /></div><div><u>Scenario a couple of months back:</u></div><div>Automation suite creation in progress.</div><div>The scripts are failing due to problems within themselves.</div><div>The automation review process is identifying a lot of issues within scripts.</div><div>The naming conventions are not being followed completely.</div><div>No test data management strategy is documented.</div><div>Testing team starts estimating 100% manual regression cycle.</div><div>Management sees low confidence in automation testing.</div><div><br /></div><div>How did the perspective change within a couple of months?</div><div>Results.</div><div><br /></div><div>Business looks for results to accept success on ROI.</div><div>But someone in the top leadership had the "vision" to be patient and invest in building an Automation test suite. They accepted waiting and waiting for the build and review cycle of automation test suite, to be complete.</div><div><br /></div><div>Recently, just on click of a button the 3000+ test cases drilled thru the huge complex application with a huge business value. Helping the leadership to decide quickly not to launch the product at this point in time, and wait for the desired quality in the product to be built.</div>Riju Kansalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17338663228987794383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7120386180118735454.post-33791607813513250122010-04-16T05:00:00.000-07:002010-04-16T05:01:37.951-07:00Location of an IP address<a href="http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp">http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp</a><br />You can use this site to find out the location of any public IP address.Riju Kansalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17338663228987794383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7120386180118735454.post-64530697862353298792010-04-12T21:31:00.000-07:002010-04-12T21:59:56.436-07:00Be A Witness - Always<span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;">Let not your 'I' get identified with your body and mind. This de-identification is meditation. </span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;">The Buddha was once meditating. His mind started creating problems and distracted him from the path of enlightenment. It was as though hundreds of horses were galloping through his mind. But the monk remained a witness and did not identify with fear. His mind turned into thousands of elephants tempting him to identify with them, but again Buddha was just a witness... he saw through the mind's game. His mind became a loving deer but still Buddha remained a witness. He did not get tempted.<br /><br />Finally, his mind turned into a loving child drowning in the ocean, seeking his attention. Buddha, out of compassion, merged with his thoughts and stretched out his hands to save the drowning child. At once, the child turned into a monster and started pulling Buddha to the ocean. Buddha realised his folly and left the monster and continued being a witness. The monster turned again into a child and started pleading for help.<br /><br />Buddha continued his meditation of being not participating but being a witness. The child drowned in the ocean and emerged as an enlightened mind, reflecting Buddha's mind.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;">Learn to be a witness to your thoughts and feelings. In the witnessing consciousness, there is no identification with anything. Identification leads to misery. Worry is a form of identification. Literally, worry means twisting and tearing. Have you observed that when you worry, your moving centre gets twisted? Negative state of worry depression or fear... shows up strongly in the form of twisting one's body-moving centre.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;">I read the above extract around 6 months back. And I did not totally understand it then. But somehow it made an impact on my mind, because I tried to understand it but I couldn't make much sense of it.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;">I recalled it again and thanks to Google, it acts like a copy of your mind. You think it, you get it.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;">What I get it from this now, in my present state of my mind is, learn to dis-associate actions with results. The actions may include anything like, speaking to someone, suggesting to someone, participating in discussion, helping someone, asking for help,... You may get expected results or unexpected reactions. Do not get attached to the results or reactions. Disconnect the actions from results.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;">Sounds pretty far off. It is easy to write / read / discuss / preach, but difficult to practice. But practice make a man...</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;color:#3F3F3F;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 23px;">My take is God has made human beings as super living beings. The ultimate super powers. S/he can achieve anything desired. Just desire.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;">Extract from:</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(63, 63, 63); line-height: 23px; font-family:georgia;"><a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life/spirituality/speaking-tree/Worry-Is-A-Voluntary-Form-Of-Suffering/articleshow/5098909.cms">http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life/spirituality/speaking-tree/Worry-Is-A-Voluntary-Form-Of-Suffering/articleshow/5098909.cms</a></span></div>Riju Kansalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17338663228987794383noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7120386180118735454.post-29978826041770483032010-03-01T04:32:00.000-08:002010-03-01T04:35:08.565-08:00We are not human beings having a spiritual experience but spiritual beings having a human experienceA beautiful line said in the below article.
